The narrator seems to be a man who introduces the fact that his childhood shaped how he was in his adult life. When he was told by his father to "toughen up," that meant giving a good portion of his sensitivity away and staying solid. Because he had been relying on his backbone his entire life, he was unaware of the fact that he could love somebody. Then, he met this girl and astonishingly fell in love with her. He's trying to tell that same girl that he understands she wants to see more of his softer side, but he's never been able to open up and share that with anyone. He obviously built walls up to cover his pain, but the girl seems to see through some of it, although she does not fully understand it. His reluctance to share could be perceived as him pushing her away, but he's making it clear that he isn't. He is who he is, and he's going to need time to open up with ease, if he ever does.

I want them to sound like their from a girlfriend to a boyfriend; so not as much a guy talking about a girl or girlfriend but a girl talking about a guy or boyfriend if that makes sense.
