Jeremy Mayfield, the former NASCAR driver who was suspended indefinitely in 2009 for violating the policy of the organization of drug addiction, was arrested for drug possession and may face new charges after the goods were stolen were found in his house.
Mayfield, 42, was arrested Tuesday at his home in western North Carolina and charged with possession of methamphetamine, according to the Associated Press. Records of the Sheriff's Office Catawba County indicate that he was charged with possession of 1.5 grams of methamphetamine.
The winner 1999 Pocono 500 posted $ 3,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in district court Wednesday, AP reported. Detectives told the AP that nearly $ 100,000 worth of goods from companies in neighboring Lincoln County was found in Mayfield's house when he was arrested. The items found included welding equipment, parts of trucks and various other items were reported stolen.
Daniel Marino, a lawyer in Washington, DC, Mayfield said the search of the home of his client was done on an "unfounded allegation" and he denies all charges.
"Mr. Mayfield is not aware either stolen or methamphetamine currently on his property and denied the charge that he was in possession of methamphetamine or other illegal drugs and denied any suggestion that he knowingly received or possessed stolen goods, "said Marino.
Mayfield has shown the promise of his early racing career, but was suspended in 2009 when NASCAR said he tested positive for methamphetamine from a random drug test.
